We are looking for people to help cover repairs and maintenance of the house that are not donated or done for gratis, and more importantly, be a mentor for the family in that house. Free Child Care Is Aid As Homeless Explore Work

Faith Garnett and her son, Tre, have been homeless for the past few months, but things are looking up. Garnett has transportation to her new job, and while she works, 2-year-old Tre stays in safe, affordable day care. At night, they and other families in the Interfaith Hospitality Network sleep at one of the network's member churches. "It's very positive to be in a church while you're going through things," said Garnett, 22. Read the full story here.

Woman in Philanthropy Awards Four Grants

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Augusta received the largest grant, $37,900. The money will go toward the expenses of its children's day shelter, also known as its day care, President Gary Billingsley said. The shelter provides a stable environment for the children it serves, Executive Director Sarah MacDonald said. "They come to the same place every day. They do the same routines every day," she said. "It gives them structure in their lives, which is what the children really need."

"Three weeks ago, Lawanda and Timothy Howard were homeless. Their Christmas, however, will be dry and warm, with plenty of gifts for their four children and food for the family. That's because the Howards are one of three families enrolled in the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Augusta, an organization that uses various member church facilities to shelter families in need. For Christmas, volunteers step up their contributions to provide an experience that parallels holidays at home..."

Executive Director Sarah MacDonald said the group has a waiting list of 90 families, a record high she attributed partly to the economy and partly to impending cold weather.
